Historical Regatta of Venice

Historical Regatta of Venice

Every year, on the occasion of the famous Historical Regatta of Venice, in our beautiful terrace overlooking the Grand Canal, the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal serves a tasty, fresh seafood menu that is the right backdrop to this beautiful and colourful Venetian Festival.

The Historical Regatta of Venice

There are more than 120 regattas in the lagoon of Venice each year, most of them involving Venetian rowing. In the Venetian style of rowing – voga alla veneta – the rower stands up  facing the direction of travel. This unique sport has been practiced in the Venetian lagoon for thousands of years. The very word regatta is of ancient Venetian coinage, only coming into English in 1652 in a description of a Venetian event.

Doges and procurators used to add a regatta and ducal procession to every noteworthy occurrence, whether political, religious, or social. The king of France is coming to visit, let’s have a regatta! An important dynastic marriage is arranged between merchant families – pull out those Gondolas and wear your best livery, we’re having a regatta! A plot uncovered, a plague ended, a treaty signed, let’s clean the hulls, it’s regatta time!

The most sumptuous is the Historical Regatta of VeniceRegata Storica – in September. This annual event begins with a procession of ornate boats down the Grand canal, rowed by locals in 16th –century costume.

Once the tourist prelude is over, the races start! There are four races: one reserved for young rowers, one for women, one for rowers of caorline. But the best known and most exciting of these is the last one: the “Campioni su Gondolini” race.  A series of small, sporting gondolas fly down the Grand Canal to the finishing line at the famous “machina”, the spectacular floating stage located in front of the Ca’ Foscari palace, where the prize-giving ceremony takes place.
