Rome and the Barbarians - Expo at Palazzo Grassi
On display from January 26 to July 20, 2008 at the Palazzo Grassi, Rome and the Barbarians, an interesting journey to the Roman Empire's most difficult era when people of profoundly different cultures and traditions from the steppes of Asia and Eastern Europe gradually began to dominate the Western world, writing the Ostrogoti, Longobardi, Vandali, Merovingi and Visigoti names in the annals of history.
The purpose of the event is to give the public a clearer look on this mistakenly marked dark period that witnessed the inevitable fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of a new civilization, sprung from the merge between Roman and Barbarian cultures, uniquely evolving to create the foundations of the modern world.
A vast collection of archeological finds loaned from the most celebrated European, Asian and American museums create this unique exhibit providing a closer look at the people who developed an art profoundly influenced by the grandeur of the Roman world which, while slowly disappearing under their dominance, fascinated them so much so as to provide a model for all those in contact with its splendor.
The exhibit, covering three floors of the splendid Palazzo Grassi, displays the various phases of coexistence and conflict between the Roman Empire and the Barbarian populations: the first conflicts, the terrible pillaging of Rome, Attila's advance and the first traces of the Holy Roman Empire provide a panorama that embraces the early centuries of Middle Ages interpreted in light of Roman inheritance.
