President of the Republic Cup - Lug sail day 2008
The President's Cup - Lug Sail Day regatta will be held on September 14, 2008, organized by Avt, the Lug Sail Association. A great lug sail event in the Adriatic sea.
The event includes a regatta in St. Mark's basin following by a boat parade to Campo della Saluta, near Punta della Doganana.
Sails are strictly hoisted to one third according to the tradition set in the lagoon at at the turn of the eighteenth century and never ousted by the so-called "marconi" crew. The lug sail is named after the fact that the top mast supporting the sail (the "pico" or "antenea de sora" in slang) hangs from the mast at about one third of its length (starting from the bow).
2008 is an important year for Avt since it will be celebrating its twentieth anniversary. The association that unites the fans of these boats was, in fact, founded in 1988 expanding over twenty years to become a racing, boating and even cultural reference point as demonstrated by Avt's role as supporter and promoter of the Province and Water Authority's fight for sustainable fishing.
