Christmas in Venice

Finally we come to the most beautiful season in Venice! Christmas in Venice: here time seems to stand still , keeping all the magic of Christmas intact!!
Well before Christmas, Venice glows with thousands of lights and decorations.  In these days  shops are full of goods and their windows shine with sparkling colors.

Nowadays  the Christmas Eve  is celebrated in Venice  with a sumptuous dinner, while on Christmas day  people  invite close relatives over for a traditional Christmas lunch.
In the past, at Christmas Eve in Venice people were used  to invite some bachelor or a stranger with no  family in town. The menu included roasted food, flavored with bay leaves and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, and big and excellent eels.  The most commonly served delicacy  was the “Mandorlato”, a dessert that has a long tradition in the history of Venice. It ’a mixture of honey and egg white,  to which are added sweet almonds.

Another delicacy that you could taste at Christmas in Venice was  the Mostarda: it is made of candied fruit and a spicy mustard-flavoured syrup. Since XIII century,  Venice  was the Emporium of European spices, which were imported from Turkey, India and Arab countries. The center of the spice trade was  Rialto. Here, even today, during the Christmas period you can find an excellent Mostarda and a superb Mandorlato in one of the oldest grocery of Venice.

In the past, carnival began 26th December in St Mark’s square. The opening night began within the seven theatres of Venice whilst the spectators were all masked. Nowadays , the Boxing Day (Santo Stefano) is celebrated in a more sober way:  a walk among the nativity scenes in the various churches of the city, a Christmas market tour,  a Christmas concert in one of the churches of Venice.

And what about you? Would you like to celebrate your Christmas in Venice with us?
